Searching For Jack McCall in Yankton SD
I loved doing this story! Yankton has a lot of history and there is an endless treasure trove of stories to tell. Jack McCall killed Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood, South Dakota on August 2, 1876. McCall was tried twice for the crime. First in Deadwood where he was found not guilty and later in Yankton where he was found guilty. He was hung on March 1, 1877 at the intersection of current day Hiway 81 and Hiway 50. McCall was initially buried in the Pioneer Cemetery just north of the current Walmart in Yankton.
This video takes you on a journey to find McCall’s burial site. Over the years he was buried in three different sites in Yankton. Besides finding the actual burial site of Jack McCall, there are many rabbit holes to this story and many unanswered questions. Here are just a few:
Why did Jack McCall kill Wild Bill Hickok? Why isn’t there a valid picture of McCall or the hanging itself? Why are there two pages missing from the Sheriff’s Ledger Book between April 3 through April 9, 1877…..just a month after McCall was hanged? Why did the authorities want to bring McCall back to Yankton? Why was McCall tried twice for the same crime? What does the Fireball Run TV show of 2017 have to do with this story?
